He came from further outA
That land of fear and droughtA
And dust and gravelB
He got a touch of sunC
And rested at the runC
Until his cure was doneC
And he could travelB
-
When spring had decked the plainD
He flitted off againE
As flit the swallowsF
And from that western landG
When many months were spannedG
A letter came to handG
Which read as followsF
-
Dear Sir I take my penE
In hopes that all their menE
And you are heartyH
You think that I've forgotI
Your kindness Mr ScottI
Oh no dear sir I'm notI
That sort of partyH
-
You sometimes bet I knowJ
Well now you'll have a showJ
The 'books' to frightenC
Up here at WingadeeH
Young Billy Fife and meH
We're training Strife and heH
Is a all right unC
-
Just now we're running byesF
But sir first time he triesF
I'll send you word ofK
And running 'on the crook'L
Their measures we have tookL
It is the deadest hookL
You ever heard ofK
-
So when we lets him goL
Why then I'll let you knowL
And you can have a showL
To put a mite onM
Now sir my leave I'll takeL
Yours truly William BlakeL
P S Make no mistakeL
He's a all right unC
-
-
-
By next week's RiverineC
I saw my friend had beenC
A bit too cunningL
I read The racehorse StrifeN
And jockey William FifeN
Disqualified for lifeN
Suspicious runningL
-
But though they spoilt his gameO
I reckon all the sameO
I fairly ought to claimO
My friend a white unC
For though he wasn't straightH
His deeds would indicateH
His heart at any rateH
Was a all right unC
