A Tale of the TerritoryA
-
-
The run of Billabong go dryB
Is just beyond Lime Burner's GapC
Its waterhole and tank supplyB
Is excellent upon the mapC
But lacking nature's liquid drenchD
The station staff are wont to tryB
With Bob in Sweeps their thirst to quenchD
Or nearly quench at Bong go dryB
-
The parson made five yearly roundsE
That soil of arid souls to delveF
He wrote I'll come for seven poundsE
Or I could stop away for twelveF
But lack of lucre brought aboutG
The pusillanimous replyB
Our luxuries are all cut outG
You'll have to go to Bong go dryB
-
Now rabbit skins were very highB
There'd been a kind of rabbit rushH
And what with traps and sticks they'd shyB
The station blacks were very flushH
And each was taught his churchman's jobI
When that one parson's plate comes roun'J
No good you put in sprat or bobI
Too quick you put in harp a crownJ
-
The parson's word was duly keptK
He came and did his bit of speakL
The boss remarked he hadn't sleptK
So sound and well for many a weekL
But Gilgai Jack and Monkey JawM
Regarded preaching as a crimeN
Against good taste they said What forO
That one chap yabber all the timeN
-
Proceedings ceased the boss's hatP
Was raked from underneath his chairQ
The coloured congregation satP
And waited with expectant airQ
At last from one far distant seatR
Where Gilgai's Mary'd been asleepS
There came a kind of plaintive bleatR
Say boss Who won the harp crown sweepS
