Song Of The Federation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD AEAEFGFG AHAHIJIJ C FKFK LMLM ININ FOFO ANAN MHMH

As the nations sat together grimly waitingA
The fierce and ancient nations battle scarredB
Grown grey in their lusting and their hatingA
Ever armed and ever ready keeping guardB
Through the tumult of their warlike preparationC
And the half stilled clamour of the drumsD
Came a voice crying Lo a new made NationC
To her place in the sisterhood she comesD
-
And she came She was beautiful as morningA
With the bloom of the roses on her mouthE
Like a young queen lavishly adorningA
Her claims with the splendours of the SouthE
And the fierce old nations looking on herF
Said Nay surely she were quickly overthrownG
Hath she strength for the burden laid upon herF
Hath she power to protect and guard her ownG
-
Then she spoke and her voice was clear and ringingA
In the ears of the nations old and greyH
Saying Hark and ye shall hear my children singingA
Their war song in countries far awayH
They are strangers to the tumult of the battleI
They are few but their hearts are very strongJ
'Twas but yesterday they called unto the cattleI
But they now sing Australia's marching songJ
-
-
SONG OF THE AUSTRALIANS IN ACTIONC
-
For the honour of Australia our MotherF
Side by side with our kin from over seaK
We have fought and we have tested one anotherF
And enrolled among the brotherhood are weK
-
There was never post of danger but we sought itL
In the fighting through the fire and through the floodM
There was never prize so costly but we bought itL
Though we paid for its purchase with our bloodM
-
Was there any road too rough for us to travelI
Was there any path too far for us to treadN
You can track us by the blood drops on the gravelI
On the roads that we milestoned with our deadN
-
And for you O our young and anxious motherF
O'er your great gains keeping watch and wardO
Neither fearing nor despising any otherF
We will hold your possessions with the swordO
-
-
-
Then they passed to the place of world long sleepingA
The grey clad figures with their deadN
To the sound of their women softly weepingA
And the Dead March moaning at their headN
-
And the Nations as the grim procession endedM
Whispered Child thou has seen the price we payH
From War may we ever be defendedM
Kneel thee down new made Sister Let us PrayH
