Out in the grey cheerless chill of the morning lightA
Out on the track where the night shades still lurkB
ere the first gleam of the sungod's returning lightA
Round come the racehorses early at workB
-
Reefing and pulling and racing so readilyC
Close sit the jockey boys holding them hardD
Steady the stallion there canter him steadilyC
Don't let him gallop so much as a yardD
-
Fiercely he fights while the others run wide of himE
Reefs at the bit that would hold him in thrallF
Plunges and bucks till the boy that's astride of himE
Goes to the ground with a terrible fallF
-
Stop him there Block him there Drive him in carefullyC
Lead him about till he's quiet and coolG
Sound as a bell though he's blown himself fearfullyG
Now let us pick up this poor little foolG
-
Stunned Oh by Jove I'm afraid it's a case with himE
Ride for the doctor keep bathing his headH
Send for a cart to go down to our place with himE
No use One long sigh and the little chap's deadH
-
Only a jockey boy foul mouthed and bad you seeC
Ignorant heathenish gone to his restI
Parson or Presbyter Pharisee SadduceeC
What did you do for him bad was the bestI
-
Negroes and foreigners all have a claim on youJ
Yearly you send your well advertised hoardK
But the poor jockey boy shame on you shame on youJ
Feed ye My little ones what said the LordK
-
Him ye held less than the outer barbarianL
Left him to die in his ignorant sinM
Have you no principles humanitarianL
Have you no precept Go gather them inM
-
Knew he God's name In his brutal profanityC
That name was an oath out of many but oneL
What did he get from our famed ChristianityC
Where has his soul if he had any goneN
-
Fourteen years old and what was he taught of itO
What did he know of God's infinite GraceC
Draw the dark curtain of shame o'er the thought of itO
Draw the shroud over the jockey boy's faceC
