We see it each day in the paperA
And know that there's mischief in storeB
That some unprofessional caperA
Has landed a shark on the shoreB
We know there'll be plenty of troubleC
Before they get through with the funD
Because he's been coming the doubleC
On clients has Gentleman OneD

Alas for the gallant attorneyE
Intent upon cutting a dashF
He starts on life's perilous journeyE
With rather more cunning than cashF
And fortune at first is invitingG
He struts his brief hour in the sunD
But lo on the wall is the writingG
Of Nemesis Gentleman OneD

For soon he runs short of the dollarsH
He fears he must go to the wallI
So Peters' trust money he collarsH
To pay off his creditor PaulI
Then robs right and left for he goes itJ
In earnest when once he's begunD
Descensus Averni he knows itJ
It's easy for Gentleman OneD

The crash comes as soon as the seasonsK
He loses his coin in a mineL
Or booming in land or for reasonsK
Connected with women and wineL
Or maybe the cards or the horsesM
A share of the damage have doneD
No matter the end of the course isN
The same Re a Gentleman OneD

He struggles awhile to keep goingG
To stave off detection and shameO
But creditors clamorous growingG
Ere long put an end to the gameO
At length the poor soldier of SatanD
His course to a finish has runD
And just think of Windeyer waitingG
To deal with A Gentleman OneD

And some face it boldly and brazenD
The shame and the utter disgraceP
While others more sensitive hastenD
Their names and their deeds to effaceP
They snap the frail thread which the FuriesP
And Fates have so cruelly spunD
May the great Final Judge and His juriesP
Have mercy on Gentleman OneD
