Hay And Hell And Booligal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABCCB DDBEEB BBBFFB GGBHHB IIBJJB IIBKKB LLBLLB MMBNNB OOBPPBYou come and see me boys he said | A |
You'll find a welcome and a bed | A |
And whiskey any time you call | B |
Although our township hasn't got | C |
The name of quite a lively spot | C |
You see I live in Booligal | B |
- | |
And people have an awful down | D |
Upon the district and the town | D |
Which worse than hell itself the call | B |
In fact the saying far and wide | E |
Along the Riverina side | E |
Is 'Hay and Hell and Booligal' | B |
- | |
No doubt it suits 'em very well | B |
To say its worse than Hay or Hell | B |
But don't you heed their talk at all | B |
Of course there's heat no one denies | F |
And sand and dust and stacks of flies | F |
And rabbits too at Booligal | B |
- | |
But such a pleasant quiet place | G |
You never see a stranger's face | G |
They hardly ever care to call | B |
The drovers mostly pass it by | H |
They reckon that they'd rather die | H |
Than spend the night in Booligal | B |
- | |
The big mosquitoes frighten some | I |
You'll lie awake to hear 'em hum | I |
And snakes about the township crawl | B |
But shearers when they get their cheque | J |
They never come along and wreck | J |
The blessed town of Booligal | B |
- | |
But down to Hay the shearers come | I |
And fill themselves with fighting rum | I |
And chase blue devils up the wall | B |
And fight the snaggers every day | K |
Until there is the deuce to pay | K |
There's none of that in Booligal | B |
- | |
Of course there isn't much to see | L |
The billiard table used to be | L |
The great attraction for us all | B |
Until some careless drunken curs | L |
Got sleeping on it in their spurs | L |
And ruined it in Booligal | B |
- | |
Just now there is a howling drought | M |
That pretty near has starved us out | M |
It never seems to rain at all | B |
But if there should come any rain | N |
You couldn't cross the black soil plain | N |
You'd have to stop in Booligal | B |
- | |
- | |
- | |
We'd have to stop With bated breath | O |
We prayed that both in life and death | O |
Our fate in other lines might fall | B |
Oh send us to our just reward | P |
In Hay or Hell but gracious Lord | P |
Deliver us from Booligal | B |
