I am the maid of the lustrous eyesA
Of great fruitionB
Whom the sons of men that are over wiseA
Have called AmbitionB
-
And the world's success is the only goalC
I have within meD
The meanest man with the smallest soulC
May woo and win meD
-
For the lust of power and the pride of placeE
To all I profferF
Wilt thou take thy part in the crowded raceE
For what I offerF
-
The choice is thine and the world is wideG
Thy path is lonelyD
I may not lead and I may not guideG
I urge thee onlyD
-
I am just a whip and a spur that smitesE
To fierce endeavourF
In the restless days and the sleepless nightsE
I urge thee everF
-
Thou shalt wake from sleep with a startled cryH
In fright unleapingI
At a rival's step as it passes byH
Whilst thou art sleepingI
-
Honour and truth shall be overthrownJ
In fierce desireF
Thou shalt use thy friend as a stepping stoneJ
To mount thee higherF
-
When the curtain falls on the sordid strifeK
That seemed so splendidL
Thou shalt look with pain on the wasted lifeK
That thou hast endedL
-
Thou hast sold thy life for a guerdon smallM
In fitful flashesE
There has been reward but the end of allM
Is dust and ashesE
-
For the night has come and it brings to naughtN
Thy projects cherishedO
And thine epitaph shall in brass be wroughtN
He lived and perishedO
-
-
ArtP
-
I wait for thee at the outer gateQ
My love mine onlyD
Wherefore tarriest thou so lateQ
While I am lonelyD
-
Thou shalt seek my side with a footstep swiftR
In thee implantedS
Is the love of Art and the greatest giftR
That God has grantedL
-
And the world's concerns with its rights and wrongsE
Shall seem but small thingsE
Poet or painter or singer of songsE
Thine art is all thingsE
-
For the wine of life is a woman's loveT
To keep beside theeD
But the love of Art is a thing aboveT
A star to guide theeD
-
As the years go by with the love of ArtP
All undiminishedO
Thou shalt end thy days with a quiet heartP
Thy work is finishedO
-
So the painter fashions a picture strongI
That fadeth neverF
And the singer singeth a wondrous songI
That lives for everF
