You see the thing was this way there was meA
That rode Panopply the Splendor mareB
And Ikey Chambers on the Iron DookC
And Smith the half caste rider on RegretD
And that long bloke from Wagga him that rodeE
Veronikew the Smowy River horseF
Well none of them had chances not a chanceG
Among the lot unless the rest fell deadH
Or wasn't trying for a blind man's dogC
Could see Enchantress was a certain copI
And all the books was layin' six to fourJ
-
They brought her out to show our lot the roadE
Or so they said but then Gord's truth you knowK
You can believe 'em though they took an oathL
On forty Bibles that they's tell the truthM
But anyhow an amateur was upN
On this Enchantress and so Ike and meA
We thought that we might frighten him a bitO
By asking if he minded riding roughP
Oh not at all says he oh not at allQ
I heard at Robbo Park and if it comesR
To bumping I'm your Moses Strike me blueS
-
Says he I'll bump you over either railT
The inside rail or outside which you chooseU
Is good enough for me which settled IkeC
For he was shaky since he near got killedV
From being sent a buster on the railT
When some chap bumped his horse and fetched him downW
At Stony Bridge so Ikey thought it bestX
To leave this bloke alone and I agreedY
-
So all the books was layin' six to fourJ
Against the favourite and the amateurZ
Was walking this Enchantress up and downW
And me and Smithy backed him for we thoughtA2
We might as well get something for ourselvesB2
Because we knew our horses couldn't winC2
But Ikey wouldn't back him for a bobD2
Because he said he reckoned he was stiffE2
And all the books was layin' six to fourJ
-
Well anyhow before the start the newsU
Got around that this here amateur was stiffE2
And our good stuff was blued and all the booksF2
Was in it and the prices lengthened outG2
And every book was bustin' of his throatH2
And layin' five to one the favouriteH2
So there was we that couldn't win ourselvesB2
And this here amateur that wouldn't tryI2
And all the books was layin' five to oneJ2
-
So Smithy says to me You take a holdH2
Of that there moke of yours and round the turnK2
Come up behind Enchantress with the whipL2
And let her have it that long bloke and meA
Will wait ahead and when she comes to usM2
We'll pass her on and belt her down the straightH2
And Ikey'll flog her home because his bossN2
Is judge and steward and the Lord knows whatH2
And so he won't be touched and as for usM2
We'll swear we only hit her by mistakeC
And all the books was layin' five to oneJ2
-
Well off we went and comin' to the turnK2
I saw the amateur was holdinig backC
And poking into every hole he couldH2
To get her blocked and so I pulled behindH2
And drew the whip and dropped it on the mareB
I let her have it twice and then she shotH2
Ahead of me and Smithy opened outH2
And let her up beside him on the railsO2
And kept her there a beltin' her like smokeC
Until she struggled past him pullin' hardH2
And came to Ike but Ikey drew his whipL2
And hit her on the nose and sent her backC
And won the race himself for after allQ
It seems he had a fiver on The DookC
And never told us so our stuff was lostH2
And then they had us up for ridin' foulP2
And warned us off the tracks for twelve months eachQ2
To get our livin' any way we couldH2
But Ikey wasn't touched because his bossN2
Was judge and steward and the Lord knows whatH2
-
But Mister if you'll lend us half a crownW
I know three certain winners at the ParkC
Three certain cops as no one knows but meA
And thank you Mister come an' have a beerR2
I always like a beer about this timeS2
Well so long Mister till we meet againT2
