The Deposition Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHGIJCKLMNOPQR STUEVWXYZ A2B2CC2PD2E2F2VG2Z

Dust storm we thought a brown swarmA
plugging the lungs or a locust cloudB
but this was a collapse a slow sinkingC
to deeper brown and deeper still like the skyD
seen from inside a well as we are lowered downE
and the air twisting and tearing at itselfF
But it was done And the body hung thereG
like a butchered thing naked and aloneH
in a sudden hush among the ravaged airG
The ankles first slender blood cakedI
pale in the sullen dark legs brokenJ
below the knees blue bruises smolderingC
to black And the spikes We tugged ironK
from human flesh that dangled like limbsL
not fully hacked from trees nudgedM
the cross beam from side to side untilN
the sign that mocked him broke looseO
It took all three of us We shouldered the bodyP
to the ground yanked nails from wristsQ
more delicate it seemed than a young girl sR
but now swollen gnarled black as burnt twigsS
The body so heavy for such a small manT
was a knot of muscle a batch of cutsU
and scratches from the scourging and downE
the right side a clotted line of bloodV
the sour posca clogging his ragged beardW
the eyes exploded to a stare that shotX
through all of us and still speaks in my dreamsY
I know who you areZ
-
So we began to washA2
the body wrenching the arms now stiffB2
and twisted to his sides unbendingC
the ruined legs and sponging off the dirtC2
of the city sweat urine shit all the bodyP
gives from the body laying it out straightD2
on a sheet of linen rank with perfumesE2
so that we could cradle it haul itF2
to the tomb The wind shoutedV
The foul air thickened I reached overG2
to close the eyes I know who you areZ
