The clock stays tick-tocking
And life keeps moving on,
I never thought this could happen
But I guess the time had come.
The gentle looks that you wore so often
Were always filled with an abundance of pride,
However…
Death came singing her song in triumph
As she took you away from our side.
I’d give anything to get you back
Even just to talk to you again,
But I am also happy to finally know…
That now you are out of pain.
I smile at night when I see those stars
Because I will always think of you
Reminding me of our nightly walks
Where you’d teach us something new
The unforgettable sound of your voice
Still lingers in my ear,
It reminds me of your soft sweet smile
That had the power to destroy all my fears.
Your eyes would sparkle wherever you looked
Like a jewel buried inside the earth,
Let me not forget your lighthearted jokes
That would make my stomach hurt.
You fought your battle courageously
Like a soldier from the war,
And when you’d let me go from the hope-filled hugs
It would leave me wanting more.
These are the memories I adore in my mind
They burn bright like an eternal flame,
These moments with you will always be treasured
Until we meet again...
Farewell
Aurora
Poet's note: I wrote this 6 years ago as a school assignment after the loss of my grandfather. He was an anesthetist and I was still in school, trying to become a vet.
This poem is personal for me as his death was expected but his passing was not meant to be as soon as it was. During this time I was angry, lost, confused and the feelings conveyed here are meant to be sad but acceptance and hope for the future.
Writing this was the only way I saw clarity in the overwhelming grief.
