St. Ame Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCC DEDEEFF GHGHHII JKJKKLM NONOOPP QRQRRQQ ESESSQQ TUTUUVVA SUNNY glade below the bridge | A |
Clear shadows branching through a stream | B |
A hillock purple to the ridge | A |
With velvet thyme and the far gleam | B |
Of white clouds in a dream | B |
Floating above the dusky lines | C |
Of silent mountains black with pines | C |
- | |
An idle hour to lose away | D |
To question not nor muse nor know | E |
The ripples ripple where they may | D |
From brown into the amber glow | E |
The moments drift and go | E |
And what is life and toil and fret | F |
We only breathe and we forget | F |
- | |
So in their summer fields might rest | G |
Disprisoned shades that henceforth share | H |
The careless strength of souls possessed | G |
By but the moment that is there | H |
The strength which children wear | H |
Might so be stilled from thought or speech | I |
Passed into calm beyond their reach | I |
- | |
And lo the dragon fly's locked wings | J |
Upon the leaf my breath could stir | K |
And on my sleeve undoubting springs | J |
A merry minded grasshopper | K |
And see behind that fir | K |
A rat across our brook has come | L |
And rustles past us to his home | M |
- | |
And the sweet air is hushed with sound | N |
More tranceful than low lullabies | O |
The plashings of the waters drowned | N |
In babble of small insect cries | O |
And surge of leafy sighs | O |
We hear not heed enough for us | P |
Resting to feel that rest is thus | P |
- | |
Not now Oh vacant hour long past | Q |
Wherefore to day live back in thee | R |
Ill hour that grew no growth to last | Q |
Flower without seed unfruitful tree | R |
Hast thou still right to be | R |
Fade out forgotten ghost of nought | Q |
What worth or wisdom hast thou brought | Q |
- | |
Nay seedless fruitless hour not so | E |
Fade not but hide from sterner looks | S |
We have a secret we two know | E |
The secret of the woods the brooks | S |
Of wild flowers in their nooks | S |
Of all glad growing things' delight | Q |
That live and never long for night | Q |
- | |
A secret hidden from thought and will | T |
And only given to those who cease | U |
From toil and pondering and are still | T |
The secret of that soulless peace | U |
The soul's joy and release | U |
To sit and see the sun and smile | V |
Only because we live the while | V |
