St. Ame Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCC DEDEEFF GHGHHII JKJKKLM NONOOPP QRQRRQQ ESESSQQ TUTUUVV

A SUNNY glade below the bridgeA
Clear shadows branching through a streamB
A hillock purple to the ridgeA
With velvet thyme and the far gleamB
Of white clouds in a dreamB
Floating above the dusky linesC
Of silent mountains black with pinesC
-
An idle hour to lose awayD
To question not nor muse nor knowE
The ripples ripple where they mayD
From brown into the amber glowE
The moments drift and goE
And what is life and toil and fretF
We only breathe and we forgetF
-
So in their summer fields might restG
Disprisoned shades that henceforth shareH
The careless strength of souls possessedG
By but the moment that is thereH
The strength which children wearH
Might so be stilled from thought or speechI
Passed into calm beyond their reachI
-
And lo the dragon fly's locked wingsJ
Upon the leaf my breath could stirK
And on my sleeve undoubting springsJ
A merry minded grasshopperK
And see behind that firK
A rat across our brook has comeL
And rustles past us to his homeM
-
And the sweet air is hushed with soundN
More tranceful than low lullabiesO
The plashings of the waters drownedN
In babble of small insect criesO
And surge of leafy sighsO
We hear not heed enough for usP
Resting to feel that rest is thusP
-
Not now Oh vacant hour long pastQ
Wherefore to day live back in theeR
Ill hour that grew no growth to lastQ
Flower without seed unfruitful treeR
Hast thou still right to beR
Fade out forgotten ghost of noughtQ
What worth or wisdom hast thou broughtQ
-
Nay seedless fruitless hour not soE
Fade not but hide from sterner looksS
We have a secret we two knowE
The secret of the woods the brooksS
Of wild flowers in their nooksS
Of all glad growing things' delightQ
That live and never long for nightQ
-
A secret hidden from thought and willT
And only given to those who ceaseU
From toil and pondering and are stillT
The secret of that soulless peaceU
The soul's joy and releaseU
To sit and see the sun and smileV
Only because we live the whileV
