The surging chafing murderous sea | A |
And the wind gusts hurtle the torn clouds by | B |
On to the south through a shuddering sky | B |
And the bare black ships scud aloof from the land | C |
'Tis as like the day as can be | A |
When the ship came in sight that came never to strand | C |
The ship that was blown on the sunken sand | C |
And he coming back to me | A |

Oh the great white snake of foam | D |
The coiling writhing snake of white foam | D |
Hissing and huddering out in the bay | E |
Over the banks where the wrecked ship lay | E |
Over the sands where the dead may lie deep | F |
There are some in the churchyard loam | D |
Some two or three the sea flung to our keep | F |
Their mothers can sit by a grave to weep | F |
But my son never came home | D |
