That day a fire was in my bloodA
I could have sung joy wrapt me roundB
The men I met seemed all so goodC
I scarcely knew I trod the groundB
-
How easy seemed all toil I laughedD
To think that once I hated itE
The sunlight thrilled like wine I quaffedE
Delight divine and infiniteE
-
The very day was not too longF
I felt so patient I could waitE
Being certain So the hours in songF
Chimed out the minutes of my fateE
-
For she was coming she at lastE
I knew I knew that bolts and barsG
Could stay her not my heart throbbed fastE
I was not more certain of the starsG
-
The twilight came grew deeper nowH
The hour struck minutes passed and stillI
The passionate fervour of her vowH
Ran in my heart's ear audibleJ
-
I had no doubt at all I knewK
That she would come and I was thenL
Most certain while the minutes flewK
Ah how I scorned all other menL
-
Next moment Ah it was was notE
I heard the stillness of the streetE
Night came The stars had not forgotE
The moonlight fell about my feetE
-
So I rebuked my heart and saidE
Be still for she is coming seeM
Next moment coming Ah her treadE
I hear her coming it is sheM
-
And then a woman passed The hourN
Rang heavily along the airO
I had no hope I had no powerN
To think for thought was but despairO
-
A thing had happened What My brainP
Dared not so much as guess the thingQ
And yet the sun would rise againL
Next morning I stood marvellingQ
