I PROEMA
This was a sweet white wildwood violetB
I found among the painted slips that growC
Where under hot house glass the flowers forgetD
How the sun shines and how the cool winds blowC
-
The violet took the orchid's colouringE
Tricked out its dainty fairness like the restF
Yet still its breath was as the breath of SpringE
And the wood's heart was wild within its breastF
-
The orchid mostly is the flower I loveG
And violets the mere violets of the woodH
For all their sweetness have not power to moveI
The curiosity that rules my bloodJ
-
Yet here in this spice laden atmosphereK
Where only nature is a thing unrealL
I found in just a violet planted hereM
The artificial flower of my idealL
II CHRISTMAS EVEN
April hearted LilianO
April with our love beganP
Winter comes but April violetsQ
Linger onR
-
So the fancy of an hourS
Born of sudden sun and showerS
Braves the winter and has blossomedT
Into flowerS
