The human spirits saw I on a dayA
Sitting and looking each a different wayA
And hardly tasking subtly questioningB
Another spirit went around the ringB
To each and each and as he ceased his sayA
Each after each I heard them singly singB
Some querulously high some softly sadly lowC
We know not what avails to knowC
We know not wherefore need we knowC
This answer gave they still unto his suingB
We know not let us do as we are doingB
Dost thou not know that these things only seemD
I know not let me dream my dreamD
Are dust and ashes fit to make a treasureE
I know not let me take my pleasureE
What shall avail the knowledge thou hast soughtF
I know not let me think my thoughtF
What is the end of strifeG
I know not let me live my lifeG
How many days or e'er thou mean'st to moveH
I know not let me love my loveI
Were not things old once newJ
I know not let me do as others doJ
And when the rest were over pastK
I know not I will do my duty said the lastK
-
Thy duty do rejoined the voiceL
Ah do it do it and rejoiceL
But shalt thou then when all is doneM
Enjoy a love embrace a beautyN
Like these that may be seen and wonM
In life whose course will then be runM
Or wilt thou be where there is noneM
I know not I will do my dutyN
-
And taking up the word around above belowC
Some querulously high some softly sadly lowC
We know not sang they all nor ever need we knowC
We know not sang they what avails to knowC
Whereat the questioning spirit some short spaceO
Though unabashed stood quiet in his placeO
But as the echoing chorus died awayA
And to their dreams the rest returned apaceO
By the one spirit I saw him kneeling lowC
And in a silvery whisper heard him sayA
Truly thou know'st not and thou need'st not knowC
Hope only hope thou and believe alwayA
I also know not and I need not knowC
Only with questionings pass I to and froC
Perplexing these that sleep and in their follyN
Imbreeding doubt and sceptic melancholyN
Till that their dreams deserting they with meN
Come all to this true ignorance and theeN
