Cease empty Faith the Spectrum saithA
I was and lo have beenB
I God am nought a shade of thoughtC
Which but by darkness seenD
Upon the unknown yourselves have thrownE
Placed it and light betweenD
-
At morning's birth on darkened earthA
And as the evening sinksF
Awfully vast abroad is castG
The lengthened form that shrinksF
And shuns the sight in midday lightH
And underneath you slinksF
-
From barren strands of wintry landsF
Across the seas of timeI
Borne onward fast ye touch at lastG
An equatorial climeI
-
In equatorial noon sublimeI
At zenith stands the sunJ
And lo around far near are foundK
Yourselves and Shadow noneJ
-
A moment yea but when the dayL
At length was perfect dayL
A moment so and light we knowM
With dark exchanges ayeN
-
Nor morn nor eve shall shadow leaveO
Your sunny paths secureP
And in your sight that orb of lightH
Shall humbler orbs obscureP
-
And yet withal 'tis shadow allQ
Whate'er your fancies dreamI
And I misdeemed that was that seemedR
Am not whate'er I seemI
