An Incident Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDDEE FGFGDDHHII DJDJKLIIMM DNDNOOPPII

'Twas on a sunny summer dayA
I trod a mighty city's streetB
And when I started on my wayA
My heart was full of fancies sweetB
But soon as nothing could be seenC
But countenances sharp and keenC
Nought heard or seen around but toldD
Of something bought or something soldD
And none that seemed to think or careE
That any save himself was thereE
-
Full soon my heart began to sinkF
With a strange shame and inward painG
For I was sad within to thinkF
Of this absorbing love of gainG
And various thoughts my bosom tostD
When suddenly my path there crossedD
Locked hand in hand with one anotherH
A little maiden and her brotherH
A little maiden and she woreI
Around her waist a pinaforeI
-
And hand in hand along the streetD
This pretty pair did softly goJ
And as they went their little feetD
Moved in short even steps and slowJ
It was a sight to see and blessK
That little sister's tendernessL
One hand a tidy basket boreI
Of flowers and fruit a chosen storeI
Such as kind friends oft send to othersM
And one was fastened in her brother'sM
-
It was a voice of meaning sweetD
And spake amid that scene of strifeN
Of home and homely duties meetD
And charities of daily lifeN
And often should my spirit failO
And under cold strange glances quailO
'Mid busy shops and busier throngP
That speed upon their ways alongP
The thick and crowded thoroughfareI
I'll call to mind that little pairI
