An Incident Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDDEE FGFGDDHHII DJDJKLIIMM DNDNOOPPII'Twas on a sunny summer day | A |
I trod a mighty city's street | B |
And when I started on my way | A |
My heart was full of fancies sweet | B |
But soon as nothing could be seen | C |
But countenances sharp and keen | C |
Nought heard or seen around but told | D |
Of something bought or something sold | D |
And none that seemed to think or care | E |
That any save himself was there | E |
- | |
Full soon my heart began to sink | F |
With a strange shame and inward pain | G |
For I was sad within to think | F |
Of this absorbing love of gain | G |
And various thoughts my bosom tost | D |
When suddenly my path there crossed | D |
Locked hand in hand with one another | H |
A little maiden and her brother | H |
A little maiden and she wore | I |
Around her waist a pinafore | I |
- | |
And hand in hand along the street | D |
This pretty pair did softly go | J |
And as they went their little feet | D |
Moved in short even steps and slow | J |
It was a sight to see and bless | K |
That little sister's tenderness | L |
One hand a tidy basket bore | I |
Of flowers and fruit a chosen store | I |
Such as kind friends oft send to others | M |
And one was fastened in her brother's | M |
- | |
It was a voice of meaning sweet | D |
And spake amid that scene of strife | N |
Of home and homely duties meet | D |
And charities of daily life | N |
And often should my spirit fail | O |
And under cold strange glances quail | O |
'Mid busy shops and busier throng | P |
That speed upon their ways along | P |
The thick and crowded thoroughfare | I |
I'll call to mind that little pair | I |
