ON the grey levels of the plain of lifeA
When slowly swirledB
The moving hills of morning mistC
Hedged in the worldB
While yet undared the path of toil and strifeA
I found a friendD
Whose faith I pictured would persistC
Until the endD
Then peered the stooping sun across the plainE
The world he kissedC
In sudden glory shimmeringF
Flamed all the mistC
The sullen Darkness carried off his slainE
And straight awayG
Like a forefinger beckoningF
The white road layG
Her hand in mine upon the path we pressedH
Together sharedI
The flowers we plucked to find them painE
And forward faredI
Till we stood radiant on the mountain crestH
And still aheadJ
Dipping to pleasant depths of plainE
The white road ledJ
But when I urged her onward to the endD
Her heart peered outK
-
Upon the road's unswerving leapL
In dizzy doubtK
Nay we have reached the highest why descendD
Her lips demurredM
And with us gazing at the steepL
There stood a thirdM
Her eyes clasped his in an embrace of loveN
Said they No moreO
Here on the crest is our abodeP
Our journey o'erQ
The goal for you So leaving them aboveN
I went aloneR
And still the arrow of the roadP
Sped on straight onS
But darker and more desolate the wayG
Until I turnedT
Lo in the halo of the sunU
The lovers burnedT
High on the mountain top Ah what if theyG
By passion kissedC
The goal of life and love have wonU
And I have missedC
