Rhyme Scheme: AABA CDEC FFGF HHIH JJKJ KKKK LLML NCKN OOPO QQRQ OOKO CCSC TTNT UUVU WWKW OOAO OOJO FFXFAbout me leagues of houses lie | A |
Above me grim and straight and high | A |
They climb the terraces lean up | B |
Like long grey reefs against the sky | A |
- | |
Packed tier on tier the people dwell | C |
Each narrow hollow wall is full | D |
And in that hive of honeycomb | E |
Remote and high I have one cell | C |
- | |
And when I turn into my street | F |
I hear in murmurous retreat | F |
A tide of noises flowing out | G |
The city ebbing from my feet | F |
- | |
And lo two long straight walls between | H |
There dwells a little park serene | H |
Where blackened trees and railings hem | I |
A little handkerchief of green | H |
- | |
Yet I can see across the roof | J |
The sun the stars and God For proof | J |
Between the twisting chimney pots | K |
A pointing finger old aloof | J |
- | |
The traffic that the city rends | K |
Within my quiet haven ends | K |
In a deep murmur or across | K |
My pool a gentle ripple sends | K |
- | |
A chime upon the silence drab | L |
Paints music hooting motors stab | L |
The pleasant peace and far and faint | M |
The jangling lyric of the cab | L |
- | |
And when I wander proud and free | N |
Through my domain unceasingly | C |
The endless pageant of the shops | K |
Marches along the street with me | N |
- | |
About me ever blossoming | O |
Like rich parterres the hoardings fling | O |
An opulence of hue and make | P |
Within my garden endless Spring | O |
- | |
The droning tram cars spitting light | Q |
And like great bees in drunken flight | Q |
Burly and laden deep with bloom | R |
The 'busses lumbering home at night | Q |
- | |
Sometimes an afternoon will fling | O |
New meaning on each sombre thing | O |
And low upon the level roofs | K |
The sultry sun lies smouldering | O |
- | |
Sometimes the fog that faery girl | C |
Her veil of wonder will unfurl | C |
And crescent gaunt and looming flat | S |
Are sudden mysteries of pearl | C |
- | |
New miracles the wet streets show | T |
On stems of flame the gas lamps glow | T |
I walk upon the wave and see | N |
Another London drowned below | T |
- | |
And when night comes strange jewels strew | U |
The winding streets I wander through | U |
Like pearls upon a woman's throat | V |
The street lamps' swerving avenue | U |
- | |
In every face that passes mine | W |
Unfathomed epics I divine | W |
Each figure on the pavement is | K |
A vial of untasted wine | W |
- | |
Through lands enchanted wandering | O |
To all a splendour seems to cling | O |
Lo from a window beacon high | A |
Hope still the Night is questioning | O |
- | |
And so ere sleep I lie and mark | O |
Romance's stealthy footsteps Hark | O |
The rhythm of the horse's hoof | J |
Bears some new drama through the dark | O |
- | |
So in this tall and narrow street | F |
I lie as in Death's lone retreat | F |
And hear loud in the pulse of Life | X |
Eternity upon me beat | F |
