About me leagues of houses lieA
Above me grim and straight and highA
They climb the terraces lean upB
Like long grey reefs against the skyA
-
Packed tier on tier the people dwellC
Each narrow hollow wall is fullD
And in that hive of honeycombE
Remote and high I have one cellC
-
And when I turn into my streetF
I hear in murmurous retreatF
A tide of noises flowing outG
The city ebbing from my feetF
-
And lo two long straight walls betweenH
There dwells a little park sereneH
Where blackened trees and railings hemI
A little handkerchief of greenH
-
Yet I can see across the roofJ
The sun the stars and God For proofJ
Between the twisting chimney potsK
A pointing finger old aloofJ
-
The traffic that the city rendsK
Within my quiet haven endsK
In a deep murmur or acrossK
My pool a gentle ripple sendsK
-
A chime upon the silence drabL
Paints music hooting motors stabL
The pleasant peace and far and faintM
The jangling lyric of the cabL
-
And when I wander proud and freeN
Through my domain unceasinglyC
The endless pageant of the shopsK
Marches along the street with meN
-
About me ever blossomingO
Like rich parterres the hoardings flingO
An opulence of hue and makeP
Within my garden endless SpringO
-
The droning tram cars spitting lightQ
And like great bees in drunken flightQ
Burly and laden deep with bloomR
The 'busses lumbering home at nightQ
-
Sometimes an afternoon will flingO
New meaning on each sombre thingO
And low upon the level roofsK
The sultry sun lies smoulderingO
-
Sometimes the fog that faery girlC
Her veil of wonder will unfurlC
And crescent gaunt and looming flatS
Are sudden mysteries of pearlC
-
New miracles the wet streets showT
On stems of flame the gas lamps glowT
I walk upon the wave and seeN
Another London drowned belowT
-
And when night comes strange jewels strewU
The winding streets I wander throughU
Like pearls upon a woman's throatV
The street lamps' swerving avenueU
-
In every face that passes mineW
Unfathomed epics I divineW
Each figure on the pavement isK
A vial of untasted wineW
-
Through lands enchanted wanderingO
To all a splendour seems to clingO
Lo from a window beacon highA
Hope still the Night is questioningO
-
And so ere sleep I lie and markO
Romance's stealthy footsteps HarkO
The rhythm of the horse's hoofJ
Bears some new drama through the darkO
-
So in this tall and narrow streetF
I lie as in Death's lone retreatF
And hear loud in the pulse of LifeX
Eternity upon me beatF
