A PAIR of lovers in the streetA
I dare not mock with reverence meetA
My unforgetting heart I cheatA
-
Ah God spare me so soon againB
At the barred door to beat in vainC
And find their dalliance such fierce painC
-
I yearning up from Hell s abyssD
See dreaming through their worlds of blissD
This Dante and his BeatriceE
-
For these the distant goal have wonF
For which God made the plasm and sunF
His patient labouring is doneF
-
For these each Spring has been a brideG
And lonely worlds were spawned and diedG
Chaos for them in birth throes criedG
-
Far out in seas of Space forlornH
This crescent wave was slowly bornH
That thunders on the beach of mornH
-
Ah they so soon to be meshed inI
The web of splendour silken thinI
The nebulae were set to spinI
-
Up the long path from joy to joyJ
Love led the way Can aught destroyJ
The task that was the stars employJ
-
Their ecstasy to God is moreK
Than Lucifer at Heaven s doorK
Entreating pardon for his warK
-
These two are gods for by love swayedL
They have God s special task essayedL
And new worlds for their gladness madeL
-
This little hour so lightly givenF
Makes earth too mean a place to live inI
And broken toys His Hell and HeavenF
-
All Time expectant of their blissD
Hangs fearful Space through her abyssD
Shudders if they this hour should missD
-
For if their kiss they went withoutL
The stars would be a raining routL
And time in anguish flicker outL
-
About God s room from star to sunF
A stealthy slippered Thing would runF
Quenching cold tapers one by oneF
-
But they have kissed EternityL
Like a great clock beats steadilyL
For these mazed fools but not for meL
-
Of God s wide universe the strandsM
They hold within their clinging handsM
The stars march on at their commandsM
-
So from this moment blossom freeL
New universes tirelesslyL
Aeons of unguessed ecstasyL
-
But I can only bow and beatL
Vain hands about God s mercy seatL
And still remembering still entreatL
-
Surely my penance is completeL
The rack turns grimly when I meetL
A pair of lovers on the streetL
