I dare not mock with reverence meet | A |
My unforgetting heart I cheat | A |
- | |
Ah God spare me so soon again | B |
At the barred door to beat in vain | C |
And find their dalliance such fierce pain | C |
- | |
I yearning up from Hell s abyss | D |
See dreaming through their worlds of bliss | D |
This Dante and his Beatrice | E |
- | |
For these the distant goal have won | F |
For which God made the plasm and sun | F |
His patient labouring is done | F |
- | |
For these each Spring has been a bride | G |
And lonely worlds were spawned and died | G |
Chaos for them in birth throes cried | G |
- | |
Far out in seas of Space forlorn | H |
This crescent wave was slowly born | H |
That thunders on the beach of morn | H |
- | |
Ah they so soon to be meshed in | I |
The web of splendour silken thin | I |
The nebulae were set to spin | I |
- | |
Up the long path from joy to joy | J |
Love led the way Can aught destroy | J |
The task that was the stars employ | J |
- | |
Their ecstasy to God is more | K |
Than Lucifer at Heaven s door | K |
Entreating pardon for his war | K |
- | |
These two are gods for by love swayed | L |
They have God s special task essayed | L |
And new worlds for their gladness made | L |
- | |
This little hour so lightly given | F |
Makes earth too mean a place to live in | I |
And broken toys His Hell and Heaven | F |
- | |
All Time expectant of their bliss | D |
Hangs fearful Space through her abyss | D |
Shudders if they this hour should miss | D |
- | |
For if their kiss they went without | L |
The stars would be a raining rout | L |
And time in anguish flicker out | L |
- | |
About God s room from star to sun | F |
A stealthy slippered Thing would run | F |
Quenching cold tapers one by one | F |
- | |
But they have kissed Eternity | L |
Like a great clock beats steadily | L |
For these mazed fools but not for me | L |
- | |
Of God s wide universe the strands | M |
They hold within their clinging hands | M |
The stars march on at their commands | M |
- | |
So from this moment blossom free | L |
New universes tirelessly | L |
Aeons of unguessed ecstasy | L |
- | |
But I can only bow and beat | L |
Vain hands about God s mercy seat | L |
And still remembering still entreat | L |
- | |
Surely my penance is complete | L |
The rack turns grimly when I meet | L |
A pair of lovers on the street | L |
