The King's son walks in the garden fairA
Oh the maiden's heart is merryB
He little knows for his toil and careA
That the bride is gone and the bower is bareA
Put on garments of white my maidensC
-
The sun shines bright through the casement highD
Oh the maiden's heart is merryB
The little handmaid with a laughing eyeD
Looks down on the king's son strolling byD
Put on garments of white my maidensC
-
He little knows that the bride is goneE
And the Earl knows little as heB
She is fled with her lover afar last nightF
And the King's son is left to meB
-
And back to her chamber with velvety stepG
The little handmaid did glideH
And a gold key took from her bosom sweetI
And opened the great chests wideH
-
She bound her hair with a band of blueJ
And a garland of lilies sweetI
And put on her delicate silken shoesK
With roses at her feetI
-
She clad her body in spotless whiteF
With a girdle as red as bloodL
The glad white raiment her beauty boundM
As the sepels blind the budL
-
And round and round her white neck she flungN
A necklace of sapphires blueJ
On one white finger of either handO
A shining ring she drewJ
-
And down the stairway and out of the doorP
She glided as soft and lightF
As an airy tuft of a thistle seedQ
Might glide through the grasses brightF
-
And into the garden sweet she stoleR
The little birds carolled loudS
Her beauty shone as a star might shineT
In the rift of the morning cloudS
-
The King's son walked in the garden fairA
And the little handmaiden cameU
Through the midst of a shimmer of roses redV
Like a sunbeam through a flameU
-
The King's son marvelled his heart leaped upW
And art thou my bride said heB
For North or South I have never beheldV
A lovelier maid than theeB
-
And dost thou love me the little maid criedV
A fine King's son I wisX
And the king's son took her with both his handsY
And her ruddy lips did kissX
-
And the little maid laughed till the beaded tearsZ
Ran down in a silver rainA2
O foolish King's son and she clapped her handsY
Till the gold rings rang againB2
-
O King's son foolish and fooled art thouC2
For a goodly game is playedV
Thy bride is away with her lover last nightV
And I am her little handmaidV
-
And the King's son sware a great oath said heB
Oh the maiden's heart is merryB
If the Earl's fair daughter a traitress beB
The little handmaid is enough for meB
Put on garments of white my maidensC
-
The King's son walks in the garden fairA
Oh the maiden's heart is merryB
And the little handmaiden walketh thereA
But the old Earl pulleth his beard for careA
Put on garments of white my maidensC
