Canst thou not rest O city	A
That liest so wide and fair	B
Shall never an hour bring pity	A
Nor end be found for care	B

Thy walls are high in heaven	C
Thy streets are gay and wide	D
Beneath thy towers at even	E
The dreamy waters glide	D

Thou art fair as the hills at morning	F
And the sunshine loveth thee	A
But its light is a gloom of warning	F
On a soul no longer free	A

The curses of gold are about thee	A
And thy sorrow deepeneth still	G
One madness within and without thee	A
One battle blind and shrill	G

I see the crowds for ever	H
Go by with hurrying feet	I
Through doors that darken never	H
I hear the engines beat	I

Through days and nights that follow	J
The hidden mill wheel strains	K
In the midnight's windy hollow	J
I hear the roar of trains	K

And still the day fulfilleth	A
And still the night goes round	L
And the guest hall boometh and shrilleth	A
With the dance's mocking sound	L

In chambers of gold elysian	E
The cymbals clash and clang	M
But the days are gone like a vision	E
When the people wrought and sang	M

And toil hath fear for neighbour	H
Where singing lips are dumb	N
And life is one long labour	H
Till death or freedom come	N

Ah the crowds that for ever are flowing	F
They neither laugh nor weep	O
I see them coming and going	F
Like things that move in sleep	O

Grey sires and burdened brothers	P
The old the young the fair	H
Wan cheeks of pallid mothers	P
And the girls with golden hair	H

Care sits in many a fashion	E
Grown grey on many a head	Q
And lips are turned to ashen	E
Whose years have right to red	Q

Canst thou not rest O city	A
