The City (2) Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FAFA AGAG HIHI JKJK ALAL EMEM HNHN FOFO PHPH EQEQ AHAH

Canst thou not rest O cityA
That liest so wide and fairB
Shall never an hour bring pityA
Nor end be found for careB
-
Thy walls are high in heavenC
Thy streets are gay and wideD
Beneath thy towers at evenE
The dreamy waters glideD
-
Thou art fair as the hills at morningF
And the sunshine loveth theeA
But its light is a gloom of warningF
On a soul no longer freeA
-
The curses of gold are about theeA
And thy sorrow deepeneth stillG
One madness within and without theeA
One battle blind and shrillG
-
I see the crowds for everH
Go by with hurrying feetI
Through doors that darken neverH
I hear the engines beatI
-
Through days and nights that followJ
The hidden mill wheel strainsK
In the midnight's windy hollowJ
I hear the roar of trainsK
-
And still the day fulfillethA
And still the night goes roundL
And the guest hall boometh and shrillethA
With the dance's mocking soundL
-
In chambers of gold elysianE
The cymbals clash and clangM
But the days are gone like a visionE
When the people wrought and sangM
-
And toil hath fear for neighbourH
Where singing lips are dumbN
And life is one long labourH
Till death or freedom comeN
-
Ah the crowds that for ever are flowingF
They neither laugh nor weepO
I see them coming and goingF
Like things that move in sleepO
-
Grey sires and burdened brothersP
The old the young the fairH
Wan cheeks of pallid mothersP
And the girls with golden hairH
-
Care sits in many a fashionE
Grown grey on many a headQ
And lips are turned to ashenE
Whose years have right to redQ
-
Canst thou not rest O cityA
That liest so wide so fairH
Shalt never an hour bring pityA
Nor end be found for careH
