Life And Nature Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHAH AIFI AFDF DHDH AJFJ

I passed through the gates of the cityA
The streets were strange and stillB
Through the doors of the open churchesC
The organs were moaning shrillB
-
Through the doors and the great high windowsD
I heard the murmur of prayerE
And the sound of their solemn singingF
Streamed out on the sunlit airE
-
A sound of some great burdenG
That lay on the world's dark breastH
Of the old and the sick and the lonelyA
And the weary that cried for restH
-
I strayed through the midst of the cityA
Like one distracted or madI
Oh Life Oh Life I kept sayingF
And the very word seemed sadI
-
I passed through the gates of the cityA
And I heard the small birds singF
I laid me down in the meadowsD
Afar from the bell ringingF
-
In the depth and the bloom of the meadowsD
I lay on the earth's quiet breastH
The poplar fanned me with shadowsD
And the veery sang me to restH
-
Blue blue was the heaven above meA
And the earth green at my feetJ
Oh Life Oh Life I kept sayingF
And the very word seemed sweetJ
