Tarantula, Or The Dance Of Death Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEAE FGFH IJIJ KLKL AMAM NDNA

During the plague I came into my ownA
It was a time of smoke pots in the houseB
Against infection The blind head of boneA
Grinned its abuseC
-
-
Like a good democrat at everyoneD
Runes were recited daily charms were appliedE
That was the time I came into my ownA
Half Europe diedE
-
-
The symptoms are a fever and dark spotsF
First on the hands then on the face and neckG
But even before the body the mind rotsF
You can be sickH
-
-
Only a day with it before you re deadI
But the most curious part of it is the danceJ
The victim goes in short out of his headI
A sort of tranceJ
-
-
Glazes the eyes and then the muscles takeK
His will away from him the legs beginL
Their funeral jig the arms and belly shakeK
Like souls in sinL
-
-
Some caught in these convulsions have been knownA
To fall from windows fracturing the spineM
Others have drowned in streams The smooth head stoneA
The box of pineM
-
-
Are not for the likes of these Moreover flameN
Is powerless against contagionD
That was the black winter when I cameN
Into my ownA
