Late Afternoon: The Onslaught Of Love Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDEFGHI BGHCJKFLMN OPQRR BSTUSVRWXYZ

For William and Emily MaxwellA
-
At this time of dayB
One could hear the caulking irons soundC
Against the hulls in the dockyardD
Tar smoke rose between treesE
And large oily patches floated on the waterF
Undulating unevenlyG
In the purple sunlightH
Like the surfaces of Florentine bronzeI
-
At this time of dayB
Sounds carried clearlyG
Through hot silences of fading daylightH
The weedy fields lay drownedC
In odors of creosote and saltJ
Richer than double colored taffetaK
Oil floated in the harborF
Amoeboid iridescent limpL
It called to mind the slender limbsM
Of Donatello's DavidN
-
It was lovely and she was in loveO
They had taken a covered boat to one of the islandsP
The city sounds were faint in the distanceQ
Rattling of carriages tumult of voicesR
Yelping of dogs on the decks of bargesR
-
At this time of dayB
Sunlight empurpled the worldS
The poplars darkened in ranksT
Like imperial servantsU
Water lapped and lispedS
In its native and quiet tongueV
Oakum was in the air and the scent of grassesR
There would be fried smelts and cherries and creamW
Nothing designed by Italian artisansX
Would match this evening's perfectionY
The puddled oil was a miracle of colorsZ
