SHEPHERDA
-
-
Not the blue fountained Florida hotelB
Bell capped bellevued straight jacketed and deckedC
With chromium palms and a fromage of moonD
Not goodnight chocolates nor the soothing slideE
Of hu tres and sentinel straight up martinisF
Neither the yacht heraldic nor the stretchG
Limos and pants Swiss banks or Alpine stocksH
Shall solace you or quiet the long painI
Of cold ancestral disinheritanceH
Severing your friendly commerce with the beastsH
Gone lapsed and cancelled rendered obsoleteJ
As the gonfalon of BessarabiaK
The shawm the jitney the equestrian orderL
The dark daguerreotypes of ParadiseH
-
TOWNIEM
-
-
No humble folding cot no steaming styN
Or sheep dipped meadow now shall dignifyN
Your brute and sordid commerce with the beastsH
Scotch your flea bitten bitterness or downO
The voice that keeps repeating Up your ArsH
Poetica your earliest diapered dreamP
Of the long gone Odd Fellows amityM
Of bunny and scorpion the entente cordialeB
Of lamb and lion the old nursery fraudQ
And droll Aesopic zoo in which the chatterL
Of chimp and chaffinch manticore and mouseH
Diverts us from all thought of entrec tesH
Prime ribs and rashers filets mignonnettesH
Provided for the paired pythons and jackalsH
Off to their catered second honeymoonsH
On Noah s forty day excursion cruiseH
-
SHEPHERDA
-
-
Call it if this should please you but a dreamP
A bald long standing lie and mockeryM
Yet it deserves better than your contemptR
Think also of that interstellar darknessH
Silence and desolation from which the TempterM
Like a space capsule exiled into orbitS
Looks down on our green cabinet of peaceH
A place classless and weaponless withoutT
Envy or fossil fuel or architectureM
Think of him as at dawn he views a snailB
Traveling with blind caution up the spineU
Of a frond asway with its little inching weightV
In windless nods that deepen with assentW
Till the ambler at last comes back to earthX
Leaving his route as on the boughs of heavenY
Traced with a silver scrawl The morning mistZ
Haunts all about that action till the sunY
Makes of it a small glory and the dewA2
Holds the whole scale of rainbow the accordB2
Of stars and waters luminously viewedC2
At the same time by water walking spidersH
That dimple a surface with their passagesH
In the lewd Viennese catalogue of dreamsH
It s one of the few to speak of without shameD2
-
TOWNIEM
-
-
It is the dream of a shepherd king or childE2
And is without all blemish except oneY
That it supposes all virtue to stemF2
From pure simplicity But many curesH
Of body and of spirit are the fruitG2
Of cultivated thought Kindness itselfH2
Depends on what we call considerationY
Your fear of corruption is a fear of thoughtI2
Therefore you would be thoughtless Think againJ2
Consider the perfect hexagrams of snowK2
Those broadcast emblems of divinityM
That prove in their unduplicable shapesH
Insights of Thales and PythagorasH
If you must dream dream of the ratioK2
Of Nine to Six to Four Palladio usedL2
To shape those rooms and chapels where the soulB
Imagines itself blessed and finds its peaceH
Even in chambers of the MalcontentaL2
Those just proportions we hypostatizeH
Not as flat prairies but the City of GodL2
