On Walden's Range at morning timeA
The sun shone brightly downB
It shone across the winding PageC
Near Murrurundi townB
-
It glittered o'er the Burning MountD
Where murky shadows fellE
Across the path to travellers knownF
To some alas too wellE
-
There stands a simple block of stoneF
Erected as a markG
To show the spot where he fought and diedH
That gallant Peter ClarkeG
-
And if you will but list awhileI
To you I will relateJ
What happened there to Peter ClarkeG
And Jimmy Clarke his mateJ
-
They camped one night close by the rangeK
In songs the hours flew pastL
And little did poor Peter thinkM
That night would be his lastL
-
At dawn they toiled the steep ascentN
They had scarcely reached the topO
When a voice in accents stern and coldP
Commanded them to stopO
-
'Hand up your money watch and chain '-
The robber sternly criedH
'Who takes my money takes my life '-
The angry Clarke repliedH
-
Then laughed the robber loud in scornQ
As he his pistol drewR
Said he 'My hand is firm and strongS
And my aim is ever trueR
-
'And he who will my word gainsayT
Though he be earl or knightU
I swear by all I sacred holdP
He ne'er shall see morning lightU
-
'So give up your money now my ladV
And do not idly raveW
Resist and by the God aboveX
This night you'll fill the grave '-
-
'Those are but words and idle words '-
The daring Clarke repliedH
And with one rapid bound he strodeY
Close by the robber's sideH
-
And now commenced the struggleZ
For life between them bothA2
One hand of Clarke's the pistol graspedB2
And the other grasped his throatC2
-
Now haste you haste you Jimmy ClarkeG
And seek for help in needD2
Your comrade's welfare nay his lifeE2
Depends on your good speedD2
-
But hark to that loud pistol shotF2
In a second rends the skiesG2
A human being on the sodH2
In his death struggle liesG2
-
But in his dying gaspI2
Poor Peter seemed to sayT
'Revenge revenge you Peter ClarkeG
And so he passed awayT
-
But the robber frightened by his deedD2
In terror now did lieJ2
For the hand of Clarke upon his throatC2
Is tighter as he diedH
-
And so indeed he was avengedK2
For God has said it soL2
'Who takes a life must yield a life '-
And the murderer met his doomM2
