Holy Dan Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEAEFGHG IJKJHLML HNONPOHO QRSS TSSSSSSS ESSSJIHI SLSSUSSS| It was in the Queensland drought | A |
| And over hill and dell | B |
| No grass the water far apart | C |
| All dry and hot as hell | B |
| The wretched bullock teams drew up | D |
| Beside a water hole | E |
| They d struggled on through dust and drought | A |
| For days to reach this goal | E |
| And though the water rendered forth | F |
| A rank unholy stench | G |
| The bullocks and the bullockies | H |
| Drank deep their thirst to quench | G |
| - | |
| Two of the drivers cursed and swore | I |
| As only drivers can | J |
| The other one named Daniel | K |
| Best known as Holy Dan | J |
| Admonished them and said it was | H |
| The Lord s all wise decree | L |
| And if they d only watch and wait | M |
| A change they d quickly see | L |
| - | |
| Twas strange that of Dan s bullocks | H |
| Not one had gone aloft | N |
| But this he said was due to prayer | O |
| And supplication oft | N |
| At last one died but Dan was calm | P |
| He hardly seemed to care | O |
| He knelt beside the bullock s corpse | H |
| And offered up a prayer | O |
| - | |
| quot One bullock Thou has taken Lord | Q |
| And so it seemeth best | R |
| Thy will be done but see my need | S |
| And spare to me the rest quot | S |
| - | |
| A month went by Dan s bullocks now | T |
| Were dying every day | S |
| But still on each occasion would | S |
| The faithful fellow pray | S |
| quot Another Thou has taken Lord | S |
| And so it seemeth best | S |
| Thy will be done but see my need | S |
| And spare to me the rest quot | S |
| - | |
| And still they camped beside the hole | E |
| And still it never rained | S |
| And still Dan s bullocks died and died | S |
| Till only one remained | S |
| Then Dan broke down good Holy Dan | J |
| The man who never swore | I |
| He knelt beside the latest corpse | H |
| And here s the prayer he prore | I |
| - | |
| quot That s nineteen Thou has taken Lord | S |
| And now You ll plainly see | L |
| You d better take the bloody lot | S |
| One s no damn good to me quot | S |
| The other riders laughed so much | U |
| They shook the sky around | S |
| The lightning flashed the thunder roared | S |
| And Holy Dan was drowned | S |
