Ye spirits of the freeA
Can ye forever seeA
Your brother manB
A yoked and scourged slaveC
Chains dragging to his graveC
And raise no hand to saveC
Say if you canB
In pride and pomp to rollD
Shall tyrants from the soulD
God s image tearE
And call the wreck their ownF
While from the eternal throneF
They shut the stifled groanF
And bitter prayerE
Shall he a slave be boundG
Whom God hath doubly crownedG
Creation s lordH
Shall men of Christian nameI
Without a blush of shameI
Profess their tyrant claimI
From God s own wordJ
No at the battle cryK
A host prepared to dieK
Shall arm for fightL
But not with martial steelM
Grasped with a murderous zealM
No arms their foes shall fellN
But love and lightL
Firm on Jehovah s lawsO
Strong in their righteous causeP
They march to saveC
And vain the tyrant s mailQ
Against their battle hailQ
Till cease the woe and wailQ
Of tortured slaveC
