O Waly waly up the bankA
O wary waly doun the braeB
And waly waly yon burn sideC
Where I and my love wer wont to gaeD
I lean'd my back unto an aikD
I thocht it was a trustie treeE
But first it bow'd and syne it brak'D
Sae my true love did lichtlie meE
O waly waly but love be bonnieE
A little time while it is newF
But when its auld it waxeth cauldC
And fadeth awa' like the morning dewC
O wherefore should I busk my heidC
Or wherefore should I kame my hairG
For my true love has me forsookD
And says he'll never lo'e me mairG
-
Noo Arthur's seat sall be my bedC
The sheets sall neir be press'd by meE
Saint Anton's well sall be my drinkD
Since my true love's forsaken meE
Martinmas wind when wilt thou blawH
And shake the green leaves off the treeE
O gentle death when wilt thou comeI
For of my life I am wearieE
-
'Tis not the frost that freezes fellH
Nor blawing snaw's inclemencieJ
'Tis not sic cauld that makes me cryE
But my love's heart grown cauld to meE
Whan we cam' in by Glasgow tounF
We were a comely sicht to seeE
My love was clad in the black velvetC
An' I mysel' in cramasieE
-
But had I wist before I kiss'dC
That love had been so ill to winF
I'd lock'd my heart in a case o' goudC
And pinn'd it wi' a siller pinF
Oh oh if my young babe were bornF
And set upon the nurse's kneeE
And I mysel' were dead and ganeE
And the green grass growing over meE
