There's not a stately hallA
There's not a cottage fairB
That proudly stands on Southern soilC
Or softly nestles thereB
But in its peaceful wallsD
With wealth or comfort blessedE
A stormy battle fierce hath ragedF
In gentle woman's breastE
-
There Love the true the braveG
The beautiful the strongH
Wrestles with Duty gaunt and sternI
Wrestles and struggles longH
He falls no more againJ
His giant foe to meetK
Bleeding at every opening veinL
Love falls at Duty's feetK
-
O Daughter of the SouthM
No victor's crown be thineN
Not thine upon the tented fieldO
In martial pomp to shineN
But with unfaltering trustP
In Him who rules on highQ
To deck thy loved ones for the frayR
And send them forth to dieQ
-
She the tried the trueS
The loving wife of yearsT
Chokes down the rising agonyU
Drives back the starting tearsV
'I yield thee up ' she criesW
'In the country's cause to fightX
Strike for our own our children's homeY
And God defend the right '-
-
O Daughter of the SouthM
When our fair land is freeU
When peace her lovely mantle throwsZ
Softly o'er land and seaU
History shall tell how thouA2
Hast nobly borne thy partB2
And won the proudest triumph yetC2
The victory of the heartB2
