In good King Charles's golden daysA
When loyalty no harm meantB
A furious High Church man I wasC
And so I gain'd prefermentB
Unto my flock I daily preach'dB
Kings are by God appointedB
And damn'd are those who dare resistB
Or touch the Lord's anointedB
And this is law I will maintainD
Unto my dying day sirE
That whatsoever king shall reignD
I will be Vicar of Bray sirE
-
When Royal James possess'd the crownF
And popery grew in fashionG
The penal law I houted downF
And read the declarationG
The Church of Rome I found would fitB
Full well my constitutionG
And I had been a JesuitB
But for the RevolutionG
And this is law I will maintainD
Unto my dying day sirE
That whatsoer king shall reignD
I will be Vicar of Bray sirE
-
When William our deliverer cameH
To heal the nation's grievanceI
I turned the cat in pan againJ
And swore to him allegianceI
Old principles I did revokeK
Set conscience at a distanceI
Passive obedience is a jokeK
A jest is non resistanceI
And this is law I will maintainD
Unto my dying day sirE
That whatsoer king shall reignD
I will be Vicar of Bray sirE
-
When glorious Anne became our queenL
The Church of England's gloryM
Another face of things was seenL
And I became a ToryM
Occasional conformists baseN
I damn'd and moderationG
And thought the Church in danger wasC
From such prevaricationG
And this is law I will maintainD
Unto my dying day sirE
That whatsoer king shall reignD
I will be Vicar of Bray sirE
-
When George in pudding time came o'erE
And moderate men looked big sirE
My principles I chang'd once moreO
And so became a Whig sirE
And thus preferment I procur'dB
From our faith's great defenderE
And almost every day abjur'dB
The Pope and the PretenderE
And this is law I will maintainD
Unto my dying day sirE
That whatsoer king shall reignD
I will be Vicar of Bray sirE
-
The illustrious House of HanoverE
And Protestant successionG
To these I lustily will swearP
Whilst they can keep possessionG
For in my faith and loyaltyB
I never once will falterE
George my lawful king shall beB
Except the times should alterE
And this is law I will maintainD
Unto my dying day sirE
That whatsoer king shall reignD
I will be Vicar of Bray sirE
