The Telegraph Clerk Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE FGFHIJ KLK AMA N NO PQR SASATUTU

Sitting here by my desk all dayA
Hearing the constant clickB
As the messages speed on their wayA
And the call comes sharp and quickB
Oh what a varied tale they tellC
Of joy and hope and fearD
The funeral knell and the marriage bellC
In their steady tick I hearE
-
-
'Mother is dying come at once '-
-
And the tears will almost startF
For tender daughters and loving sonsG
God pity each aching heartF
Ah how the haunting memories pressH
Of the mother's unfailing tendernessI
That is now forever o'erJ
-
-
'I am well will come tonight '-
-
How bright some eyes will glowK
All day long with a happy lightL
As they watch the moments goK
-
Have had no letters is something wrong '-
-
Some heart is sad todayA
Counting the hours that seem so longM
For the sake of one awayA
-
-
'Arthur Ross by accident killedN
Tell his mother am coming home '-
-
Alas for the home with such sorrow filledN
When the bitter tidings comeO
-
'Alice is better gaining fast '-
-
And hearts that have been bowedP
Under their weight of fear at lastQ
Shall lose their weary loadR
-
So over the wires the tidings speedS
Bitter and grave and gayA
Some hearts shall beat and some shall bleedS
For the tale they have to sayA
As I sit all day by my desk aloneT
I hear the steam go byU
And catch the wires' changeful toneT
With a smile and then a sighU
