Of evil men who name them evil things | D |
And darkest ministers of death and pain | C |
Oft bear the angel light upon their wings | D |

So are they changed The angel of the wind | E |
That speeds the sailor swiftly o'er the flood | F |
Is the sea demon of the crew behind | E |
Whose hands are eager for the stain of blood | F |

And many a mother has the angel blessed | G |
Of the dark swamp as with convulsive strain | C |
She clasps her wondering infant to her breast | G |
While baffled blood hounds lick their chops in vain | C |

Before the wicked city's traitor hold | H |
Stands a swamp angel all unangel wise | I |
Perhaps some bondsman's prayer has made it bold | H |
Thus to put off its old and unseen guise | I |

And it sends back the hound's deep throated tone | B |
Full with the message of resounding ill | J |
And the pale hunters curse it with a groan | B |
For the swamp angel is a demon still | J |
