The Old Man's Wish Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCC DDEECCC FFGGCCC HHIICCC CCJJCCC

If I live to be old for I find I go downA
Let this be my fate In a country townA
May I have a warm house with a stone at the gateB
And a cleanly young girl to rub my bald pateB
May I govern my passion with an absolute swayC
And grow wiser and better as my strength wears awayC
Without gout or stone by a gentle decayC
-
Near a shady grove and a murmuring brookD
With the ocean at distance whereupon I may lookD
With a spacious plain without hedge or stileE
And an easy pad nag to ride out a mileE
May I govern my passion with an absolute swayC
And grow wiser and better as my strength wears awayC
Without gout or stone by a gentle decayC
-
With Horace and Petrarch and two or three moreF
Of the best wits that reign'd in the ages beforeF
With roast mutton rather than ven'son or vealG
And clean though coarse linen at every mealG
May I govern my passion with an absolute swayC
And grow wiser and better as my strength wears awayC
Without gout or stone by a gentle decayC
-
With a pudding on Sundays with stout humming liquorH
And remnants of Latin to welcome the vicarH
With Monte Fiascone or Burgundy wineI
To drink the King's health as oft as I dineI
May I govern my passion with an absolute swayC
And grow wiser and better as my strength wears awayC
Without gout or stone by a gentle decayC
-
With a courage undaunted may I face my last dayC
And when I am dead may the better sort sayC
In the morning when sober in the evening when mellowJ
He's gone and left not behind him his fellowJ
May I govern my passion with an absolute swayC
And grow wiser and better as my strength wears awayC
Without gout or stone by a gentle decayC
