The Joy Of Incompleteness Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEE BGBGBHBHBBBB BIBIBBBBIHIH

If all our life were one broad glareA
Of sunlight clear uncloudedB
If all our path were smooth and fairA
By no soft gloom enshroudedB
If all life's flowers were fully blownC
Without the sweet unfoldingD
And happiness were rudely thrownC
On hands too weak for holdingD
Should we not miss the twilight hoursE
The gentle haze and sadnessF
Should we not long for storms and showersE
To break the constant gladnessE
-
If none were sick and none were sadB
What service could we renderG
I think if we were always gladB
We scarcely could be tenderG
Did our beloved never needB
Our patient ministrationH
Earth would grow cold and miss indeedB
Its sweetest consolationH
If sorrow never claimed our heartB
And every wish were grantedB
Patience would die and hope departB
Life would be disenchantedB
-
And yet in heaven is no more nightB
In heaven is no more sorrowI
Such unimagined new delightB
Fresh grace from pain will borrowI
As the poor seed that undergroundB
Seeks its true life above itB
Not knowing what will there be foundB
When sunbeams kiss and love itB
So we in darkness upward growI
And look and long for heavenH
But cannot picture it belowI
Till more of light be givenH
