Rhyme Scheme: ABCDDEDE EFCCCGDG CEDEHEIE HJDEKEEE CLCLMEEE

O waly waly up the bankA
And waly waly down the braeB
And waly waly yon burn sideC
Where I and my Love wont to gaeD
I leant my back unto an aikD
I thought it was a trusty treeE
But first it bow'd and syne it brakD
Sae my true Love did lichtly meE
-
O waly waly but love be bonnyE
A little time while it is newF
But when 'tis auld it waxeth cauldC
And fades awa' like morning dewC
O wherefore should I busk my headC
Or wherefore should I kame my hairG
For my true Love has me forsookD
And says he'll never lo'e me mairG
-
Now Arthur seat sall be my bedC
The sheets shall ne'er be prest by meE
Saint Anton's well sall be my drinkD
Since my true Love has forsaken meE
Marti'mas wind when wilt thou blawH
And shake the green leaves aff the treeE
O gentle Death when wilt thou comeI
For of my life I am wear eE
-
'Tis not the frost that freezes fellH
Nor blawing snaw's inclemencieJ
'Tis not sic cauld that makes me cryD
But my Love's heart grown cauld to meE
When we came in by Glasgow townK
We were a comely sight to seeE
My Love was clad in the black velv tE
And I mysell in cramasieE
-
But had I wist before I kistC
That love had been sae ill to winL
I had lockt my heart in a case of gowdC
And pinn'd it with a siller pinL
And oh if my young babe were bornM
And set upon the nurse's kneeE
And I mysell were dead and ganeE
And the green grass growing over meE
