Quick fly to the covert thou hunted of menA
For the bloodhounds are baying o'er mountain and glenA
The riders are mounted the loose rein is givenB
And curses of wrath are ascending to heavenB
O speed to thy footsteps for ruin and deathC
Like the hurricane's rage gather thick round thy pathD
And the deep muttered curses grow loud and more loudE
As horse after horse swells the thundering crowdE
-
Speed speed to thy footsteps thy track has been foundF

-
Through brake and through forest the man prey is drivenB
O help for the hopeless thou merciful HeavenB
On on to the mountain they're baffled againA
And hope for the woe stricken still may remainM
The fast flagging steeds are all white with their foamN
The bloodhounds have turned from the chase to their homeN
-
Joy joy to the wronged one the haven he gainsO
Escaped from his thraldom and freed from his chainsO
The heaven stamped image the God given soulP
No more shall the spoiler at pleasure controlP
O shame to Columbia that on her bright plainsO
Man pines in his fetters and curses his chainsO
Shame shame that her star spangled banner should waveQ
Where the lash is made red in the blood of the slaveQ
-
Sons of old Pilgrim Fathers and are ye thus dumbR
Shall tyranny triumph and freedom succumbR
While mothers are torn from their children apartS
And agony sunders the cords of the heartS
Shall the sons of those sires that once spurned the chainM
Turn bloodhounds to hunt and make captive againA
O shame to your honor and shame to your prideT
And shame on your memory ever abideT
-
Will not your old sires start up from the groundF
At the crack of the whip and bay of the houndF
And shaking their skeleton hands in your faceU
Curse the germs that produced such a miscreant raceU
-
O rouse ye for freedom before on your pathD
Heaven pours without mixture the vials of wrathD
Loose every hard burden break off every chainM
Restore to the bondman his freedom againA
