The Bottom Drawer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE CCCCFGCG HIJIKLML NOPOCGQG NCRCBSC

In the best chamber of the houseA
Shut up in dim uncertain lightB
There stood an antique chest of drawersC
Of foreign wood with brasses brightB
One day a woman frail and grayD
Stepped totteringly across the floorE
'Let in ' said she 'the light of dayD
Then Jean unlock the bottom drawerE
-
The girl in all youth's lovelinessC
Knelt down with eager curious faceC
Perchance she dreamt of Indian silksC
Of jewels and of rare old laceC
But when the summer sunshine fellF
Upon the treasures hoarded thereG
The tears rushed to her tender eyesC
Her heart was solemn as a prayerG
-
'Dear Grandmamma ' she softly sighedH
Lifted a withered rose and palmI
But on the elder face was naughtJ
But sweet content and peaceful calmI
Leaning upon her staff she gazedK
Upon a baby's half worn shoeL
A little frock of finest lawnM
A hat with tiny bows of blueL
-
A ball made fifty years agoN
A little glove a tasselled capO
A half done 'long division' sumP
Some school books fastened with a strapO
She touched them all with trembling lipsC
'How much ' she said 'the heart can bearG
Ah Jean I thought that I should dieQ
The day that first I laid them thereG
-
'But now it seems so good to knowN
That through these weary troubled yearsC
Their hearts have been untouched by griefR
Their eyes have been unstained by tearsC
Dear Jean we see with clearer sightB
When earthly life is almost o'erS
Those children wait me in the skiesC
For whom I locked the sacred drawer '-
