The Blind Slave Boy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDD EEFFGGHH IJKLLMM BBNOPPQQ

Come back to me mother why linger awayA
From thy poor little blind boy the long weary dayA
I mark every footstep I list to each toneB
And wonder my mother should leave me aloneB
But there s no one to joy or to sorrow with meC
For each hath of pleasure and trouble his shareD
And none for the poor little blind boy will careD
-
My mother come back to me close to thy breastE
Once more let thy poor little blind one be pressedE
Once more let me feel they warm breath on my cheekF
And hear thee in accents of tenderness speakF
O mother I ve no one to love me no heartG
Can bear like thine own in my sorrows a partG
No hand is so gentle no voice is so kindH
O none like a mother can cherish the blindH
-
Poor blind one No mother thy wailing can hearI
No mother can hasten to banish thy fearJ
And for one paltry dollar hath sold thee poor childK
Ah who can in language of mortals revealL
The anguish that none but a mother can feelL
When man is his vile lust of mammon hath trodM
On her child who is stricken and smitten of GodM
-
Blind helpless forsaken with strangers aloneB
She hears in her anguish his piteous moanB
As he eagerly listens but listens in vainN
To catch the loved tones of his mother againO
The curse of the broken in spirit shall fallP
On the wretch who hath mingled this wormwood and gallP
And his gain like a mildew shall blight and destroyQ
Who hath torn from his mother the little blind boyQ
