Slander Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG

'Twas but a breathA
And yet the fair good name was wiltedB
And friends once fond grew cold and stiltedB
And life was worse than deathA
-
One venomed wordC
That struck its coward poisoned blowD
In craven whispers hushed and lowD
And yet the wide world heardC
-
'Twas but one whisper oneE
That muttered low for very shameF
The thing the slanderer dared not nameF
And yet its work was doneE
-
A hint so slightG
And yet so mighty in its powerH
A human soul in one short hourH
Lies crushed beneath its blightG
