For the outward bound '	D

Where they put us afloat in an old Leith boat	G
That steered like a stack of hay	F

We've sweltered in the Tropics	A
When the pitch boiled through the deck	H
And saved our hides and little besides	A
In an ice cold North Sea wreck	H

We've drunk our rum in Portland	I
And we've thrashed through Bering Strait	J
And we've toed the mark on a Yankee barque	H
With a hard case Down east mate	J

We know the streets of Santos	A
And the loom of the lone Azores	A
We've eat our grub from a salt horse tub	K
Condemned from the Navy stores	A

We know the quay of Glasgow	H
And the river at Saigon	L
We've drunk our glass with a Chinese lass	A
In a house boat at Canton	M
	-
We know the road to Auckland	I
And the light on Sydney Head	N
And we've crept close hauled when the leadsman called	O
The depth of the Channel bed	N
	-
They pay us off in London	M
And it's 'O for a spell ashore '	-
But again we ship for the Southern trip	P
In a week or hardly more	Q

For it's 'Goodbye Sally and Sue'	A
And 'It's time to get afloat '	-
With an aching head and a straw stuffed bed	N
And a knife and an oil skin coat	G
	-
Sing 'Time to leave her Johnny '	-
Sing 'Bound for the Rio Grande '	-
When the tug turns back you follow her track	H
For a last long look at land	R
	-
Then the purple disappears	A
And only the blue is seen	S
That will take our bones to Davy Jones	A
And our souls to Fiddler's Green	S
