One Day's Command Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCB DACACA AEA A FGDGEG CHIHFH GCJICIKI

The plumed staff officer gallopsA
Along the swaying lineB
That shakes as beaten by hailstonesA
Shakes the loaded autumn vineB
And the earth beneath is reddenedC
But not with the stain of wineB
-
The regular shock of a batteryD
The rattling tumult stunsA
And its steady thrill through the hill sideC
Like a pulse beneath it runsA
The many are dead around itC
But the few still work the gunsA
-
'Who commands this battery '-
And Crosby his clear young eyesA
From the sliding gun sights liftingE
As the well aimed death bolt fliesA
'I command it today Sir '-
With a steady voice repliesA
-
Answers as heroes answerF
With modest words and fewG
Whose hearts and hands to dutyD
Even in death are trueG
Though its awful light is breakingE
Full on their blenchless viewG
-
The officer passes onwardC
With a less troubled eyeH
The words and the look unshakenI
Bid every wild doubt flyH
He knows that the young commanderF
Is there to do or dieH
-
To doG
andC
die for the battleJ
And day of command are doneI
While stands unmoved on the hill sideC
Each shattered blackened gunI
And Crosby in death beside themK
A deathless name has wonI
