Wild and fearful in his cavernA
Hid the naked troglodyteB
And the homeless nomad wanderedB
Laying waste the fertile plainC
Menacing with spear and arrowD
In the woods the hunter strayedB
Woe to all poor wreteches strandedB
On those cruel and hostile shoresE
From the peak of high OlympusF
Came the mother Ceres downG
Seeeking in those savage regionsH
Her lost daughter ProsperineG
But the Goddess found no refugeI
Found no kindly welcome thereJ
And no temple bearing witnessF
To the worship of the godsK
-
From the fields and from the vineyardsL
Came no fruit to deck the feastsM
Only flesh of blood stained victimsN
Smouldered on the alter firesO
And where'er the grieving goddessF
Turns her melancholy gazeP
Sunk in vilest degradationG
Man his loathsomeness displaysP
-
Would he purge his soul from vilenessP
And attain to light and worthQ
He must turn and cling foreverR
To his ancient Mother EarthQ
-
Joy everlasting fosterethQ
The soul of all creationG
It is her secret ferment firesP
The cup of life with flameS
'Tis at her beck the grass hath turnedB
Each blade toward the lightB
and solar systems have evolvedB
From chaos and dark nightB
Filling the realms of boundless spaceP
Beyond the sage's sightB
-
At bounteous nature's kindly breastB
All things that breath drink JoyT
And bird and beasts and creaping thingsP
All follow where she leadsP
Her gifts to man are friends in needB
The wreath the foaming mustB
To angels visions of God's throneG
To insects sensual lustB
