Rhyme Scheme: ABBBCDEF GHIHEDE IJEKEDE LMLMNDO GPLPEDB QRERSDT

There is a cap in the closetA
Old tattered and blueB
Of very slight valueB
It may be to youB
But a crown jewel studdedC
Could not buy it to dayD
With its letters of honorE
Brave 'Co K 'F
-
The head that it shelteredG
Needs shelter no moreH
Dead heroes make holyI
The trifles they woreH
So like chaplet of honorE
Of laurel and bayD
Seems the cap of the soldierE
Marked 'Co K '-
-
Bright eyes have looked calmlyI
Its visor beneathJ
O'er the work of the ReaperE
Grim Harvester DeathK
Let the muster roll meagreE
So mournfully sayD
How foremost in dangerE
Went 'Co K '-
-
Whose footsteps unbrokenL
Came up to the townM
Where rampart and bastionL
Looked threat'ningly downM
Who closing up breachesN
Still kept on their wayD
Till guns downward pointedO
Faced 'Co K '-
-
Who faltered or shiveredG
Who shunned battle strokeP
Whose fire was uncertainL
Whose battle line brokeP
Go ask it of HistoryE
Years from to dayD
And the record shall tell youB
Not 'Co K '-
-
Though my darling is sleepingQ
To day with the deadR
And daisies and cloverE
Bloom over his headR
I smile through my tearsS
As I lay it awayD
That battle worn capT
Lettered 'Co K '-
