A barefooted child on the crossingA
Sweeping the mud awayB
A lady in silks and diamondsC
Proud of the vain displayB
A beggar blind on the curbstoneD
A rich man passing alongE
A tiny child with a tambourineF
Wailing out her life in songE
-
A pauper in lone hearse passingA
Hurried away to the tombG
A train of carriages music grandH
And the flutter of waving plumeG
For the one there is never a mournerI
He cumbered the earth alwayB
For the other the flags at half mast droopJ
And the city wears black todayB
-
A soldier with one sleeve emptyK
That sadly hangs by his sideL
Another shuffling along the walkM
In the flush of health and prideL
A cripple girl slowly toilingA
Through the vexed and crowded streetN
And tearfully gazing at those who passO
With hearts as light as their feetN
-
A wreck of a woman flauntingA
As if proud of her very shameP
A purer sister whose modest cheeksQ
Would crimson e'en at the nameP
A petty thief stealing in terrorI
Afraid in your face to gazeR
And one who has robbed by the thousandsC
Courting the sun's broad blazaC
-
The millionaire in his carriageS
The workman plodding alongE
The humble follower of the rightT
And the slave of the giant wrongE
The murderer seeking a refugeU
Looking ever wearily backV
And the sleuth hounds of the broken lawW
Following silently in his trackV
-
The judge freed now of the ermineX
Pompous of place and powerI
And the shivering wretch his word will doomG
To prison within an hourI
The miser clutching his penniesC
The spendthrift squandering goldY
The meeked eyed Sister of MercyC
And the woman brazen and boldY
-
The widow in weeds of blacknessC
Meets the bride at the church doorZ
The future for one holds nothing but tearsC
But joy for the other in storeZ
A cradle jostles a coffinA2
Orange flowers with honeyed breathB2
Are wove by the self same fingersC
That but now made a cross for deathB2
-
Dives and Lazarus elbowC2
Each other whene'er they meetN
And the crumbs from the rich man's tableD2
Feed the beggar upon the streetN
And penury crowdeth plentyC
And sin stalks boldly abroadE2
And the infidel holds his head proudlyC
As the child of the living GodF2
-
The bee in its ceaseless searchingA
Finds sweets in each flower fairG2
And the noisome spider creeping upH2
Finds nothing but poison thereG2
And so life is made up of contrastsC
Rich and poor coward and braveI2
Virtue and vice and all will findJ2
Equality in the graveI2
