Christmas time has come againA
But ah where are the merry chimesB
Which on the air their glad refrainC
Rang forth in other happier timesB
Where now the gladsome youthful throngD
Who 'Merry Christmas' used to greetE
With merry laugh and joyous songD
In every house in every streetE
Where now that soul inspiring sightF
When 'Santa Claus' disclosed his treasureG
Of youthful faces beaming brightF
With thankful love delight and pleasureG
Where now the merry ringing laughH
As friend meets friend on Christmas morningI
The friendly 'Christmas nog' to quaffH
All thoughts of gloom or care ignoringI
The bells hang silent in their towersJ
Our country mourns her valiant deadK
E'en happy Childhood trembling cowersJ
Responsive to a nameless dreadK
E'en Santa Claus must not be namedL
His stores are scant his servants scatteredM
His sturdy limbs are hacked and maimedL
His cheerful visage worn and batteredM
When friend meets friend a heaving sighH
The merry laugh of yore replacesJ
They sadly pass each other byH
Resolve marked on their war worn facesJ
Thou God who on the day did'st giveH
Thy only Son to save mankindN
Thou by whose power and grace we liveH
In whom we hope and comfort findN
Ah teach our cruel heartless foeH
To leave us what to us belongsJ
And to their homes contented goH
And cease henceforth in heaping wrongsJ
Upon a people who would fainC
In peace enjoy their peaceful homesJ
And in their native land remainC
Amid their sires' and grandsires' tombsJ
And teach us Lord our lot to bearO
With truly Christian resignationP
That we have sinned we're well awareO
And merited this visitationP
But judge us leniently Oh LordQ
And bless our arms in Freedom's causeJ
Teach us to seek Thy holy wordM
And be subservient to Thy lawsJ
And grant us grace to persevereR
In Freedom's cause while life remainsJ
Teach us Oh Lord to banish fearR
To bear with loss to smile at painC
And bless our martyred patriots braveH
Who in the cause of right were slainC
And grant we all beyond the graveH
May in Thy mansions meet againA
