A Soldier's Dream Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCCCDDEFFE GGHCCIJJDHHD CCKDDKHHLDDL

Last night as I toastedA
My wet feet and roastedB
A small bit of beef by a similar blazeC
While nought but the wheezingsC
The snorings and sneezingsC
Of comrades grouping in Dreamland's hazeC
Disturbed the fine visionD
The picture ElysianD
That Fancy's weird wand conjured up to my thoughtE
As she stood like a spookeF
In a garb of blue smokeF
And amid the hot embers her wonders she wroughtE
-
Adown a highwayG
We were marching so gayG
An army with banners bedecked o'er and o'erH
With the brightest garlandsC
Wove by fairest of handsC
While a flaming bouquet stuck in each musket boreI
Each triumphal archJ
It met on the marchJ
Was blazoned with 'Peace' 'Welcome home each loved one'D
While maid wife and motherH
Would with rapture discoverH
And rush out to meet lover husband and sonD
-
I forgot all my sore toesC
Nay all of my woesC
As I sprang to the threshold and clasped her dear waistK
And every campaignD
I'd gone over againD
To get from those ripe lips another such tasteK
But as I flew to herH
I dropped my fine skewerH
And with it my supper I mastered my griefL
As the vanishing visionD
of joy's ElysianD
But I couldn't get over the loss of the beefL
