To Edward Jenkinson, Esq Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBAAAACCDDEEAA FFGGHHAAIJKKLMNNOOAA PPPFair Youth who wish the Wars may cease | A |
We own you better form'd for Peace | A |
Nor Pallas you nor Mars shou'd follow | B |
Your Gods are Cupid and Apollo | B |
Who give sweet Looks and early Rhimes | A |
Bespeaking Joys and Halcyon Times | A |
Your Face which We as yet may praise | A |
Calls for the Myrtle and the Bays | A |
The Martial Crowns Fatigues demand | C |
And laurell'd Heroes must be tann'd | C |
A Fate we never can allow | D |
Shou'd reach your pleasing polish'd Brow | D |
But granting what so young you've writ | E |
From Nature flow'd as well as Wit | E |
And that indeed you Peace pursue | A |
We must begin to Treat with you | A |
- | |
- | |
We Females Sir it is I mean | F |
Whilst I like BRISTOL for the QUEEN | F |
For all the Ladies of your Age | G |
As Plenipo' betimes engage | G |
And as first Article declare | H |
You shall be Faithful as you're Fair | H |
No Sighs when you shall know their Use | A |
Shall be discharg'd in Love's Abuse | A |
Nor kindling Words shall undermine | I |
Till you in equal Passion join | J |
Nor Money be alone your Aim | K |
Tho' you an Over weight may claim | K |
And fairly build on your Desert | L |
If with your Person goes your Heart | M |
But when this Barrier I have gain'd | N |
And trust it will be well maintain'd | N |
Who knows but some imprudent She | O |
Betraying what's secur'd by me | O |
Shall yield thro' Verse or stronger Charms | A |
To Treat anew on easier Terms | A |
- | |
- | |
And I be negligently told | P |
You was too Young and I too Old | P |
To have our distant Maxims hold | P |
