To Edward Jenkinson, Esq Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBAAAACCDDEEAA FFGGHHAAIJKKLMNNOOAA PPP

Fair Youth who wish the Wars may ceaseA
We own you better form'd for PeaceA
Nor Pallas you nor Mars shou'd followB
Your Gods are Cupid and ApolloB
Who give sweet Looks and early RhimesA
Bespeaking Joys and Halcyon TimesA
Your Face which We as yet may praiseA
Calls for the Myrtle and the BaysA
The Martial Crowns Fatigues demandC
And laurell'd Heroes must be tann'dC
A Fate we never can allowD
Shou'd reach your pleasing polish'd BrowD
But granting what so young you've writE
From Nature flow'd as well as WitE
And that indeed you Peace pursueA
We must begin to Treat with youA
-
-
We Females Sir it is I meanF
Whilst I like BRISTOL for the QUEENF
For all the Ladies of your AgeG
As Plenipo' betimes engageG
And as first Article declareH
You shall be Faithful as you're FairH
No Sighs when you shall know their UseA
Shall be discharg'd in Love's AbuseA
Nor kindling Words shall undermineI
Till you in equal Passion joinJ
Nor Money be alone your AimK
Tho' you an Over weight may claimK
And fairly build on your DesertL
If with your Person goes your HeartM
But when this Barrier I have gain'dN
And trust it will be well maintain'dN
Who knows but some imprudent SheO
Betraying what's secur'd by meO
Shall yield thro' Verse or stronger CharmsA
To Treat anew on easier TermsA
-
-
And I be negligently toldP
You was too Young and I too OldP
To have our distant Maxims holdP
