The Tree Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEEFFGGHIBBJJKK LMNNFFOOPPQQFair tree for thy delightful shade | A |
'Tis just that some return be made | A |
Sure some return is due from me | B |
To thy cool shadows and to thee | B |
When thou to birds dost shelter give | C |
Thou music dost from them receive | D |
If travellers beneath thee stay | E |
Till storms have worn themselves away | E |
That time in praising thee they spend | F |
And thy protecting pow'r commend | F |
The shepherd here from scorching freed | G |
Tunes to thy dancing leaves his reed | G |
Whilst his lov'd nymph in thanks bestows | H |
Her flow'ry chaplets on thy boughs | I |
Shall I then only silent be | B |
And no return be made by me | B |
No let this wish upon thee wait | J |
And still to flourish be thy fate | J |
To future ages may'st thou stand | K |
Untouch'd by the rash workman's hand | K |
Till that large stock of sap is spent | L |
Which gives thy summer's ornament | M |
Till the fierce winds that vainly strive | N |
To shock thy greatness whilst alive | N |
Shall on thy lifeless hour attend | F |
Prevent the axe and grace thy end | F |
Their scatter'd strength together call | O |
And to the clouds proclaim thy fall | O |
Who then their ev'ning dews may spare | P |
When thou no longer art their care | P |
But shalt like ancient heroes burn | Q |
And some bright hearth be made thy urn | Q |
